It will finally be possible to import a car to Brazil without paying absurd taxes and duties. The measure that adds 30 percentage points to the IPI tax rate on vehicles imported into Brazil is being abolished.
The import of vintage vehicles (classic cars, vintage trucks, etc.), more than 30 years old, for cultural and collection purposes is allowed, in accordance with Portaria nº 235 (of December 7, 2006) of the MDIC, Art. 25, item “H” .
Currently, importing a new car means a cascade of taxes;
Import Duty (35%), PIS (2%), Cofins (about 7%) and ICMS, levied on the final value – on top of freight and insurance costs.
The recommendation is always to seek advice from a transport company specializing in car exports, because behind the scenes there is a lot of red tape. Some of the most important steps: obtaining the Vehicle or Engine Configuration Use License (LCVM), issued by Ibama within a maximum of 60 business days. The document is granted if the imported vehicle meets the same pollutant-emission and noise limits set for domestic vehicles. Registration with the Federal Revenue's SISCOMEX, and meeting the (administrative, tax and foreign-exchange) requirements of the approving bodies: DECEX, BACEN.
